Finding a night nanny in Montreal should be easy! First off, let’s clarify some terms that get thrown around when we’re discussing support at night for your baby.

Night Nurse: A night nurse should be a nurse. Often they’re not and this is an outdated term to describe someone who would typically come to take over the care of your baby for the entire night.

Night Nanny: A night nanny is typically someone who you hire long term (think 3-4 months) to take care of your baby every night. They don’t have any specific training other than having experience as a nanny.

At Bump and Glow we are Postpartum Doula/Overnight Doula: What we do is a little different, but also quite similar to the other two. The main differences are:

  1. A doula is trained in baby care, but we are also trained in breastfeeding and pumping support, emotional support for the hormonal changes after birth, as well as how to support the physical recovery after birth (healing from a cesarean or after vaginal tearing, for example)
  2. Our support is much more flexible than the night nanny or night nurse. We typically work with families for a shorter period of time, to help them get through the initial months. We also don’t take over the care entirely at night, but work with the family to support caring for the baby.

What our nighttime support looks like (10pm-6am is our usual shift):

Your postpartum doula arrives for the night at 10pm. Since your baby is still a newborn, there isn’t an early bedtime yet, so you’ll probably be somewhere in the feed/sleep/change diaper cycle. You’ll discuss what’s been happening with your baby, how you’re feeling, any questions you have, and what the plan is for that night. You may choose to have your postpartum doula sleep in the same room with the baby, or you can choose to have the baby sleep in your room. It’s completely up to you! Your doula will wake up whenever your baby does, and at that point will either feed the baby with a bottle or assist you with breastfeeding, changing and soothing so that you can get as much sleep as possible. You will only be woken up at intervals that you’re comfortable with and your doula will support you with whatever feeding choice you have made. Overnight support for your new baby is meant to be helpful, reassuring and the ideal care for your family. When your postpartum doula leaves in the morning at 6am, she’ll be leaving you better rested and happier!

You don’t have to be tired or tapped out in those first few weeks and months.Hiring overnight support or a “night nanny” can be a great solution to getting some rest and feeling well supported in those first few months.
