“Uh oh” “Uh oh” It was early days and I was a new mom and I was verrrry tired. So, it didn’t seem unusual to me that my breast pump was talking to me.
The whooshing sound of the motor as it sucked the breastmilk out of my breasts over and over became the soundtrack to my life at that time.
Turns out, I wasn’t alone.
“My breast pump is talking to me!” is, surprisingly, not an uncommon thing to see online. I’m sure many people, while up late listening to the sounds of their Spectra or Medela pump have heard all sorts of things.
One woman said hers would whisper, “Murder, murder!” (eek!)
“Wacko, wacko” said another. I’m pretty sure this one sounds familiar to my sleep deprived self also.
“Let’s go! Let’s go!” “Move it, move it!” “Moooo, moooo!” The conversations we have with our pumps are endless and always hilarious.
Breast pumps are sold to pregnant women as the way they can claim freedom, take off the pressure of breastfeeding being the only way to feed the baby, and can help ensure that any latching issues or supply issues won’t be a reason why a woman needs to stop breastfeeding.
And they are! Breast pumps are great! So, who cares what they’re saying as long as they’re doing their job- getting the milk out so we can feed our babies!
