When the entire premise of doula work means supporting someone with physical presence, encouragement, hands-on guidance and connection you’re probably wondering what virtual doula support even means.
In a world where suddenly everything went virtual yes, we had to “pivot”. Who didn’t?!
Is virtual doula support as good as in-person support? I’ll be honest, it’s not the same thing.
Is it wayyyy better than having no doula at all? Hell yes!
You might think when you hire a doula that you’re buying some form of insurance coverage for your birth. A bouncer, an advocate, a massage therapist, a marriage counselor, and a newborn expert all-in-one, right? Ummm, not exactly!
We can’t have the baby for you, we can’t make decisions for you, and we can’t fix everything that might go wrong. (If we could, we would be charging a LOT more!)
So what are doulas actually great at?
We help you figure this whole birthing and baby thing out. We guide you to make informed decisions. We explain the process. We help decipher medical information to help you understand what’s going down. We provide you with the tools, the techniques, and the words to make this experience easier and better.
Provided you have a partner present with you, (and if you don’t, we can be there!) we can work from 2 meters away, or 20 km away. Our knowledge, our voices, and our preparation is what we “bring” to your birth.
So give virtual doula support a chance! All of our prenatal and postnatal visits are done in-person, provided you’re comfortable with that, and we offer early labour support at home to get you started on the right foot.
Just because things have changed a little, doesn’t mean we have. Doulas are hardcore birth supporters. We’d kick down the hospital doors if it meant we could be there with you (but we want to stay on the security guard’s good side…) We stay awake with phones in our hands, facetime on, middle of the night visits and phone calls, and give everything we have to make sure you have the best birth possible.
